This course meets the requirements of the new CCW law (Public Act 381) effective on July 1, 2001. and Public Act 719, effective July 1, 2003. This course complies with section 5j of 1927 PA 372 effective October 1, 2004.  The CCW course meets and exceeds the Michigan State Police Concealed Pistol Training Objectives.

Shooting a handgun is more then pulling the trigger and shooting holes in a paper target.

The handgun shooter must know the following to be  a safe and knowledgeable shooter with good marksmanship skills.

 

CCW Course Description:


This CCW training course is designed to teach the students about the legal, practical and moral application of carrying and using a handgun for self defense. Learn firearms law, legal liability and the use of deadly force. Learn safe basic self defense shooting skills and handgun operation.

 

  Course Contents:

Shooting skill information and requirements

Demonstrate safe and competent handgun operation and shooting skills   .

Multiple shot placement at 10, 15 and 21 ft.

Target size: 81/2 x 14 (legal size paper)

 

Objective:  Identify, correct and improve handgun operation techniques and shooting skills.

The applicant must demonstrate the ability to safely operate the handgun and fire consistent shots at a maximum distance of 21 ft at a legal size paper target.

 Live fire is required to qualify for the CPL course.

 Simulated or other forms of  target shooting can be used to assess and build shooting skills but cannot be used to qualify.

 Any caliber of handgun can be used.

The applicant is not required to own a handgun.

Prior handgun shooting experience is not required but is a benefit to the applicant.

There is no rapid fire or drawing form the holster.

There is no speed shooting or combat techniques

The goal of the range portion is to teach the student how to safely operate and shoot a handgun.

Safety and basic shooting skill is the focus of the range portion of the class.

 

 Optional training programs - 3 options are  available to the applicant to meet the shooting skill requirements.

 

1.  Attend the 3 hour CPL range preparation class. This can be a private class or in a small group.

2.  Attend the CPL training and receive the training allowed in the time available for the class.

If the shooting skills cannot be achieved in the class range time.

3.  Additional range time can be scheduled.

Minimum shooting skill requirements:

The student must have the basic skill requirements to place 30 shots on a legal size sheet of paper (8 1/2 x 14).

 

  Range shooting procedure and course of fire

 

The course of fire is designed with the following objectives:

Shooting skills goal:  Build a strong shooting foundation by learn and practicing the following skills:

Range training and course of fire:  60 rounds

The range course of fire objectives is to develop safe handgun operation and shooting skills through repetitive "building blocks" of core procedures that produce

the desired results in the required amount of time. Each shooting segment will build on the previous segment through reparative handgun operating procedures and firing additional shots with each sequence.

Part one: Building block

Target at 15  (21ft optional)

15 rounds of ammunition

Procedure:

Load one , fire one

load two, fire two

load three, fire three

load four, fire four

load 5 fire 5

At the end of the building block shooting session the handgun is loaded five times and 15 rounds are fired; each time shooting an additional round of ammunition is loaded fired .  This creates the "building block" procedure of shooting that develops sound handgun operating procedures and shooting skills in a progressive orderly manner.

 

Part 2 : Qualification

30 rounds

Target 15 ft (21ft optional)

The goal is to fire 2 groups of 15 rounds (5 rounds x 3 times) (5X3) at a 15 distance with 100% hits on the target.

Procedure:

1. Load 15 rounds place handgun on table. On instructors command fire 5 rounds 3 times. Each 5 rounds is a separate group of shots.

Part 3 - Self defense concepts: Point and shoot reflex shooting technique (Optional)

Point and shoot: Close up immediate response 6 - 10 ft

15 rounds

Target: Center Mass Self Defense Target

The two - handed point shooting position, viewed from the side. Note that the shooter’s line of sight is above the sights of the gun.

 

Procedure:

load 5 or 6 rounds ( depends on handgun)

Fire groups of 3

 

Goal: identify and stop the threat under adverse conditions using first 3 shots.

Reasoning:

Most people carry only the ammunition loaded in the handgun.

You want the first 3 to hit. It should not take 6 to get one or 2 hits.

This can result in several adverse conditions--

1. You run out of ammo and the attacker is still an active threat.

2. Innocent bystanders may be hit.

3. There may be more than one assailant.

 

Target

The target used is our specially designed shooting skill development target (SSDT).  This target allows the student to learn easily basic shooting skills . The student will be able to see and  understand shooting errors and learn how to improve their shooting skills.

The processes begins in the classroom with a understanding of how handguns operate, shooting skill, target evaluation and using the SSDT process to develop shooting skills.  This is achieved through instructor presentation, video demonstrations, and simulated shooting exercises using our SSDT target.

The process takes into account each phase of the shooting process with a clear and easily understandable method achieving success.

It would be reasonable to anticipate the fact that the use of iron handgun sight may not be practicable for many reasons---

1. Dim light or night

2. Rain or other vision blocking problems

3. Unannounced close attack

 

 

Equipment Required:

 

CCW/CPL  Explanation:  Both of these abbreviations are often used to refer to the Michigan Concealed Pistol License. The license required to carry a concealed handgun.
