CPL license Facts

The license you are issued is correctly called a CPL "concealed pistol license"  although many refer to it a "CCW"  read more

The Michigan CPL system is a “Pro Active” System

You have to know how “navigate” the CPL system

The CPL license is valid for up to 5 years

You are pre-approved to purchase a handgun. (The CPL license is a permit)

You can purchase a handgun(s) over the counter at the point of sale.

You are required to register a handgun

You can carry more than one handgun

You can qualify for the CPL class with any caliber of handgun.

You are not required to qualify with an instructor to carry a handgun you purchase after the initial CPL class.

There is no additional training required by law during the duration of the license - How "qualified" you are is up to you !!

You have to develop the skill you use your equipment

You are required to stay current on all applicable laws

You have to know how to find and use the laws - But ---

You are not on a state of Michigan automatic legal update link

You are not notified of changes to the law - If a law is amended or added to the existing laws you are responsible for finding, understanding and acting according to the law.

You are not notified of the expiration of your license

You must apply for the license in your county of residence

You are  required to complete a 3 hour renewal training class.

You are required to know the laws of other states where you carry your handgun

It depends on you; you know the laws and are a safe and competent CPL holder.
